One of surfing’s most loved characters; ‘Hoyo’ is renowned as much for his surfing ability as he is for his entertainment value behind the microphone.
Each year, the former world number five enlightens viewers of “Backstage” on
with his own unique perspective of what is going down in the surf and behind the scenes of the Australia’s largest surfing event, the two-week long Quiksilver Pro on Queensland’s Gold Coast.
Hoyo has also hosted his own show, a retrospective look at pro surfing’s finest moments called “Hoyo’s House” which screened on FUEL TV.
Hoy’s latest production is a series called “Hoy Inc” and it features colourful lifestyle anecdotes and interviews with surfing, musical and sports stars of the modern era.
In 1988 Hoy launched his professional surfing career on the world arena and within two years had carved out a big reputation that was enhanced by his Hawaiian performances.
He maintained his world ranking until 2000 and his mantle includes trophies from three major world tour victories; Bells Beach, Australia 1997, Figueira da Foz, Portugal 1996, Reunion Island 1995.
He was a two-time NSW and two-time Newcastle surf champion before turning pro. 'Hoyo' was also a crucial part of Merewether’s four-time Australian Surf League championship team where he competed alongside great mates Luke Egan, Simon Law and Nick Wood.
Father Brian is a long time Merewether surfing great and has influenced both Hoy’s career and shaped his boards from his early days to the present.
Matt is raising his family of three with wife Leanne in Newcastle and working for Quiksilver's Research and Development Team.
In 2008, spurred on by good mate and footballing great Andrew Johns, Hoy completed the long walk from Newcastle to Sydney (with a surf thrown in along the way!) to raise money and awareness for the “Black Dog Institute”, which caters to males suffering from depression.
